In 1984 Maeda-en started its green tea business with loose leaf tea imported directly from Japan to the United States. Green tea is believed to have tremendous health benefits; therefore, Maeda-en has expanded its products from tea bags, to instant teas, to drink mixes, and is constantly researching new ideas. In 1993 Maeda-en began manufacturing green tea ice cream with its own source of matcha (green tea powder). Since that day, Maeda-en has used the same original recipe for green tea ice cream.
